Naming of the Mountain

It was the year 1952 when the mountain was named an Island Peak. The peak was named so as it appeared to be like an island on a sea of ice when viewed from a Dingboche village. The mountain looked like an island it is outstandingly positioned in the center of the Chhukung valley. The person who gave the peak its name was Eric Shipton, a team leader of the British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition. While the mountain was renamed Imja Tse later in 1983, it remains popular as an Island Peak.

The First Ascent to the Peak

The first ascent of Island Peak was accomplished by the same team that made history by successfully summiting the world’s tallest mountain, Everest, for the first time. It was back in 1952 when a British expedition team, including Tenzing Norgay, undertook the ascent of Island Peak as part of their preparations for Mount Everest. Tenzing later became famous as one of the first two climbers to reach the summit of Everest.

Youngest Achiever

The Island Peak has been successfully climbed by people of unbelievable ages. One of them is Jordan Romero, a 13-year-old boy from the United States of America (USA). He is the youngest person to climb Island Peak in the year 2010.

Multiple Summits

The Island Peak has three distinctive summits. Its prominent central summit or the main summit, is the one that is usually climbed by most climbers. It is at a height of 6,189 meters and the highest summit of all. Additionally, there are two other lower summits on the two sides of the peak: Imja Tse West at 6,173 meters and Imja Tse South at 5,820 meters. These two summits are less popular and also less-climbed by the mountaineers.

The experience gained from the preparatory climb of the Island Peak makes them ready for other challenging Himalayan expeditions in Nepal. That same team that named Island Peak was actually the first to reach its southwest summit. They were also the first team to climb Mount Everest successfully. In fact, they used Island Peak as a training ground before attempting Mount Everest.
